AT&T SC Awards Funding for ScienceSouth on Wheels
Florence, SC, September 14, 2010- AT&T* SC has awarded ScienceSouth $25,000 to support science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education.
“ScienceSouth is very pleased with the generous support from AT&T. This funding allows ScienceSouth to continue to advance its mission of improving the science and technology skills of our children who will be our future leaders,” said Jim O’Loughlin, chairman ScienceSouth Operating Board. “AT&T is to be commended on its support of this most important initiative, particularly at this time when economic challenges are placing tremendous pressure on our educational system.”
During today’s press conference at Carver Elementary School, ScienceSouth issued proclamations to Congressman James E. Clyburn and Senator Hugh K. Leatherman for their continuous support of ScienceSouth and its programming.
“Science education is so important in our global, high-tech economy,” Congressman Clyburn said in a statement. “That is why I am so supportive of the work that ScienceSouth is doing to get students excited about science. Their work is laying a foundation that will help us grow a new generation of students interested in pursuing careers in the science field that will help our state and nation remain competitive.”
“As our world and our economy becomes more science oriented, it is imperative that our students receive a world-class science education,” Senator Hugh K. Leatherman said. “ScienceSouth is a large part of science education in the Pee Dee area. I continue to be impressed by the work and the mission of ScienceSouth. AT&T recognizes the importance of ScienceSouth as well, and I thank them for their generous and ongoing support of ScienceSouth.”
The AT&T grant will allow K-12 grade students across seven Pee Dee school districts the opportunity to engage in hands-on, standards-based programming.
“Education goes so much further than the classroom,” said Pamela L Lackey, state president, AT&T South Carolina. “Working with ScienceSouth, through projects like Science on Wheels, emphasizes our commitment to helping educate all our youth and better prepare them for the future by bringing the classroom to them,” said Lackey. “These children are tomorrow’s leaders. AT&T recognizes this and invests in projects that support the STEM curriculum of science, technology, engineering, and math.”
School districts to receive programming are: Florence School District One, Florence School District Two, Florence School District Three, Florence School District Four, Florence School District Five, Dillon School District One, and Williamsburg County School District.
