"When ScienceSouth was created years ago, it adopted a very simple, but extraordinary mission—“inspire, educate, entertain.” These three words, as small as they are, represent an organization that is busting at the seams with interest, cooperation and success."

Mobile Lab Workshops

So WATT?
Grade level: 4-8 Duration: 45 minutes Capacity: 20
Illuminate the science of electricity! Students will make an electromagnet to discover how electicity and magnetism are related. They will investigate energy transformations, experiment with circuitry and discover the functions of different electrical components by making their own working circuits.

Micro-Aquaria: Life in a Drop of Water!
Grade level: 4-8 Duration: 45 minutes Capacity: 20
Students will delve into the world of microorganisms. Students will use microscopes, to discover the differences between plant and animal cells. After making wet slides, students will examine and identify various prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells, and explore various types of microbial life forms in water, including protozoa and arthropods.

Outrageous Optics!
Grade level: 4-8 Duration: 45 minutes Capacity: 20
Students will use spectroscopes to explore the color spectra from various sources. Using lasers, students will safely investigate Snell’s laws of reflection and refraction, holograms, and even determine the width of student’s hair!

What's in Your Watershed?
Grade level: 4-8 Duration: 45 minutes Capacity: 20
What is pollution and how does it affect our watersheds? Students will test a polluted “pond” sample for pH, temperature and conductivity, then compare their results to their community’s water. Then, using the processes of filtration, sifting, magnetic attraction and flotation, they will separate the sludge to discover how and why pollution occurs.

Crystal Chemistry
Grade level: 4-8 Duration: 45 minutes Capacity: 20
Learn about the science of crystals: what they are, how they form and why they are different shapes. Then, make a mini heating pad and your own crystal "ice" sculpture.

Organic Chemistry
Grade level: 9-12 Duration: 60 minutes Capacity: 20
Investigate chemical bonding using models and other scientific tools! Students will run an organic synthesis reaction and explore atomic valence, molar concepts, balancing chemical reaction equations, and chemical reactivity.
