Design & Build a Turbine
Grade level: 4-8 Duration: 90 minutes Capacity: 30
Explore wind and water as alternative energy sources as you design and build turbines to power electrical generators. Students will learn the benefits and challenges of greener energy.

Build your own model emission-free vehicle! Students will experiment with alternative energy sources and learn how they might be used around the world to power the future.

Build a Solar Cell
Grade level: 9-12 Duration: 45 minutes Capacity: 30
Students will build a berry-powered solar cell and explore how the process of photosynthesis can be used to generate electricity. Then, they will measure the current and voltage of the solar cell and use it to power a fan.

Solar Cooker Challenge
Grade level: 4-8 Duration: 45 minutes Capacity: 30
Join in ScienceSouth's first ever Regional Challenge and compete against students from all over the Pee Dee area to design and build the best solar cooker and create the best solar cooker recipe. Students will learn about the renewable energy of the sun with hands-on design and experimentation. A ScienceSouth presenter will introduce the basics of solar cooking and provide materials and suggestions for effective designs. Participants will perfect their designs throughout the year and create their own recipes for solar cooking. Final competition will be at ScienceSouth at an Earth Day celebration in April 2009.
