ScienceSouth Names Richard Powell New Executive Director

Florence, SC, November 19, 2008 - Richard (“Dick”) Powell recently ended a 30 year career with ESAB where he held positions of Sr. Vice
President of Strategic Planning, Sr. Vice President of Information Technology, Vice President of Manufacturing,
and Controller to name a few.
Dick is a 15 year resident of Florence and is one of several leaders that initiated the start up, construction,
and growth of Cornerstone Baptist Church. Dick’s wife, Nancy, has been an elementary school teacher at Royall
Elementary School.
He holds both a BS and MBA from the University of Wisconsin.
“I’m thrilled to accept this role where I can be part of an organization dedicated to helping children learn.
I look forward to helping excite and educate our next generation in the areas of science and technology,”
stated Powell.
“Dick Powell will do an excellent job for ScienceSouth and help us responsibly grow the organization,” ScienceSouth
Operating Board Chairman Cary Ashworth said. “We feel fortunate to have someone with his experience, skills,
integrity and passion stepping into the lead position at ScienceSouth.”
ScienceSouth’s mission is to advance scientific understanding and increase the competitiveness of future generations.
Currently ScienceSouth’s mobile lab programs are part of the curriculum in eight school districts across the Pee
Dee region. Also, every first Friday of the month is a Homeschool Friday at ScienceSouth. The ScienceSouth Pavilion
at Freedom Florence is open on Saturdays for hands-on family workshops as well as birthday parties.
