Congressman John Spratt announces one million dollar appropriation for ScienceSouth.
Saturday, November 19, 2005
US Representative John Spratt (D-SC) announced that Congress has approved his request
for one million dollars for ScienceSouth. ScienceSouth, a not for profit educational
venture is dedicated to advancing the public understanding of science and technology.
The funding is part of the Energy and Water Appropriations conference passed by the
house on November 9, 2005. The funds were sought to complete the design development
phase for a permanent facility and to support the Science on Wheels, the Mobile Learning
Center.
“We are thrilled by this announcement from Rep. Spratt”. Said ScienceSouth Chairman
Hood Temple. “This funding brings the reality of a permanent center for ScienceSouth
one step closer” This announcement builds on the momentum of previous funding announcement
by SC Senator Hugh Leatherman (R Florence- District 31), which provided $500,000 supporting
the Science on Wheels initiative. In 2002 and 2003, Representatives James Clyburn (D-SC)
and John Spratt obtained a total of $600,000 which launched the ScienceSouth science and
technology programs. As a result over 30,000 students, teachers and families have taken
part in ScienceSouth programs to date.
The funds announced by Representative Spratt demonstrate the growing support for our
efforts to inspire science and technology education across the Pee Dee region of South
Carolina. “This is a very early announcement and we will await more details which will
specifically direct the uses of these funds” said Project Director Colleen Zilio. “We
look forward to our continued collaboration with Dillon, Florence and the other communities
in the Pee Dee region. This announcement will spark new youth and family learning activities
for the entire region!”
ScienceSouth’s mission is to inspire, educate, and entertain. Currently ScienceSouth
provides workshops aboard ScienceSouth on Wheels, lively science shows, and teacher
science camps throughout the Pee Dee Region.
