On Thursday, November 17, 2007 ScienceSouth will travel to Southside Middle School where one student
will become ScienceSouth’s 100,000th participant. ScienceSouth is quickly emerging as an informal
educational leader in the Pee Dee evidenced by this programming milestone.
“Since we began offering programs in 2003, ScienceSouth has been focused on improving opportunities
for the young people of the Pee Dee Region. Our mission is to advance the competitiveness our future
generations by providing a range of programs to engage young people with activities that build skills
and provide avenues for extended learning.” said Hood Temple, Chairman of ScienceSouth Board of Trustees.
By implementing the mobile laboratories, ScienceSouth has been able to leverage its resources to bring
its SC standards based science programs to large numbers of students and teachers.
The 100,000th participant Andrew Dempewolf was selected from a middle school class at Southside Middle
school. “We had the numbers worked out to determine that this class would have the 100,000th participant.
Instead of just counting down, ScienceSouth asked the students to write a letter explaining how they
see themselves as the next generation of scientist, engineer or technician” said Project Manager Perry
Gauthier. “Andrew Dempewolf sees science and engineering as a part of his life. We want to support his
vision of becoming and aeronautics engineer”.
AT&T President South Carolina, Pamela Lackey announced further support ScienceSouth’s educational
efforts by presenting an award of $24,850 to SciecneSouth through the AT&T Excelerator competitive
technology grant program. The AT&T Excelerator program provides technology access to organizations
working to strengthen underserved communities.
ScienceSouth is a non-profit institution with mission to advance scientific understanding and increase
competitiveness of future generations.
