Hood Temple Chairman of the ScienceSouth Board of Trustees, welcomed Sen. Hugh K. Leatherman Sr., (R-District 31, Florence-Darlington Cos.) in celebrating ScienceSouth’s 100,000th participant.

Temple thanked and congratulated Senator Leatherman for devoting 28 years of his life to serving Florence County. “Senator Leatherman, you are the champion of education and an invaluable leader for ScienceSouth,” Temple said. “You were with us when we launched our first mobile lab. You were with us when we had our first programs at Briggs Elementary School. You were with us when we launched our second mobile lab at Royal Elementary School, which, by the way, bears your name. You were with us for our groundbreaking at Freedom Florence for our temporary demonstration project, and are so thrilled that you are with us today to celebrate our 100,000th presentation.”

Senator Leatherman spoke to Pee Dee and state business leaders, students and staff of Southside Middle School in Florence. “As an engineer, I can personally attest to the fact that the wonder of science can encourage all of us to receive a great education,” Leatherman said.

“You know, when ScienceSouth was created years ago, it adopted a very simple but important slogan, inspire, educate and entertain. A few years ago when I first saw the Science on Wheels program, I saw a tool that if developed properly, would benefit so many young people,” Leatherman said. “ScienceSouth not only gives students an opportunity to learn, they also give very important training to the many magnificent teachers.”

“As we the residents of the Pee Dee, seek to improve our region, we have to ask ourselves what are we doing to ensure that our children will be able to compete in the global economy,” said Leatherman. “ScienceSouth has a very important role in expanding scientific education of our children. I am extremely proud to present you with a check for $500,000. This money will specifically go to further train teaches and educate students along the science curriculum.”
