ScienceSouth and Francis Marion Trail Commission Sponsor a Journey Into the Past

Posted Friday October 23, 2009

Florence, SC, October 23, 2009-Take a trip back to the days of yore before planes, trains, and automobiles with “Revolutionary Era Transportation: Bridles and Boats.” The free event, hosted by ScienceSouth and the Francis Marion Trail Commission, will kick off on Saturday, November 21, 2009 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the ScienceSouth Pavilion at Freedom Florence.

Representatives from Carolina Marsh Tacky Outdoors will give a presentation about the rich history of the Marsh Tacky horses in the Carolinas and Georgia. “Although smaller in stature than other horses, the Marsh Tackies played an important role for General Francis Marion and his troops during the American Revolution,” Interim Executive Director Erin Powers said. “Their appearance at ScienceSouth will give the public a chance to see and touch living remnants of history.”

The event will also explore transportation by sea, most notably the Brown’s Ferry Vessel. Participants will get the chance to learn about the most popular riverboat of the times and then join in to make a boat of their very own.

There will also be a chance to get a taste of the past as well. Historian Dr. Chris Kennedy of Francis Marion University will provide fascinating information about SC food during the Revolutionary War. Kennedy will compare and contrast genuine British menus with those of the colonial troops, provide images of troop movement, and present some interesting “tidbits” about General Francis Marion himself.

Don’t miss ScienceSouth’s journey back in time. The event is by sponsored by a grant from The Humanities CouncilSC and free to the public. For additional information, call 843-679-5353 ext 313 or email erin@sciencesouth.org.
