Roche Carolina Grants ScienceSouth $50,000 in Support

Monday, October 15, 2007

Florence, SC, October 8, 2007-- In an effort to improve the educational outlook of Pee Dee students, Roche Carolina, Inc. will make a second major investment in ScienceSouth. On Monday, October 15, Roche officials will formally announce their $50,000 sponsorship of ScienceSouth at West Florence High School. At this time students will participate in ScienceSouth’s gel electrophoresis workshop.

Roche Carolina was an initial investor in ScienceSouth’s development contributing $50,000 to planning and start up of programs. Since 2001, Roche has housed the operation of ScienceSouth at their Florence facility. In 2004 Roche co-sponsored a genetics workshop with ScienceSouth for 9-12 grade teachers.

“I am pleased that Roche has had the opportunity to support ScienceSouth in their efforts,” said President and General Manager Dr. Frank Cox of Roche Carolina. “We are continuing to invest in ScienceSouth’s high quality programming because we are convinced that these hands-on learning experiences increase awareness and positively influence student perceptions about science and technology careers.” Roche’s contribution will be used over three years to deliver middle and high school programs that engage students in applied science programs such as genetics, microbiology and chemistry.

“Innovative, hands-on learning is an extremely effective and fun way to open students’ eyes to science and we are privileged to have this opportunity in the Pee Dee,” said Public Affairs Manager Peter Mazzaroni of Roche Carolina. “Watching ScienceSouth grow from an idea to two mobile laboratories serving thousands of children is very exciting and we look forward to future developments.”

ScienceSouth Chairman Hood Temple said Roche’s long-standing contributions to ScienceSouth demonstrate its commitment to education. “Roche Carolina’s ongoing leadership has enabled ScienceSouth to make substantial impacts with teachers and students,” Temple said. Since 2003, ScienceSouth has engaged more than 90,000 students in hands-on, standards-based science and technology workshops and programs.

ScienceSouth is a non-profit institution with mission to advance scientific understanding and increase the competitiveness of the future generations.
