"Some people think that you can only do science in a laboratory and that's not the case. Investigating the soil under your feet and the birds in your backyard is science. "

Kids to Go Mad for Science
ScienceSouth to hold first Mad Scientist Sciencepalooza for kids.

Florence, SC, September 24, 2009-Where can you eat fried mealworms, have spooky lab fun, and see exploding pumpkins? Only at ScienceSouth’s Mad Scientist Sciencepalooza on Saturday, October 3, 2009, of course! The event is for children ages 5-12 and runs from 9 am to noon at the ScienceSouth Pavilion at Freedom Florence.

“This October we really wanted to do something out-of-the-box for kids,” Pavilion Program Coordinator Erin Powers said. “The Mad Scientist Sciencepalooza offers us a chance to highlight the science behind what we traditionally think of as spooky or unusual. They’ll get to make gooey slime, snack on chocolate chirp cookies, and see our mad scientist at work.”

On Saturday the ScienceSouth Pavilion will be transformed into a mad scientist lab. “Kids can come dressed in their favorite costumes and make creations they can take home with them,” Powers said. “We hope the kids have a great time, and most importantly come away being wowed not only by the experience but by science.”

The cost for attendance is $15, which includes a snack. Costumes are optional. Parents can visit www.sciencesouth.org to register their child or call 843-679-5353 for further assistance. Space is limited to 30 children. Registration for the event ends on Friday, October 2, 2009 at noon.

The Mad Scientist Sciencepalooza is part of ScienceSouth’s monthly ScienceSaturdays, which highlight specific areas of science. ScienceSouth’s mission is to advance scientific understanding and increase the competitiveness of future generations.
