"As a school district administrator, I will tell you that ScienceSouth provides resources that as a school district we’re not able to provide. They’re filling that niche for us, that vital important niche."

Senator Hugh Leatherman recognized by ScienceSouth for his support and leadership

Friday, September 01, 2006

FLORENCE - August proved to be a great month for education in the Pee Dee as ScienceSouth launched a second mobile science lab. The launch of Science on Wheels 2 is a significant advancement for ScienceSouth's pursuit of its mission to inspire science education. "Sen. Leatherman believes in public education. He is our champion. Because of his commitment and dedication to ScienceSouth, we will continue to pursue our very vital mission," Temple said. "As an expression of our loyalty and gratitude to (Leatherman), I'm proud to unveil a second mobile lab, which we have dedicated in (his) honor."

The new mobile lab will feature Leatherman's name and silhouette serving as tribute his commitment to improving education in the Pee Dee. "I am very happy with ScienceSouth's efforts, and I am proud of our teachers and students," Leatherman said. "I hope that these funds will help enhance science programs throughout the Pee Dee."

ScienceSouth announced its new addition at Royall Elementary, a school that's no stranger to its programs. Yet, state Sen. Hugh Leatherman had an announcement to make of his own. Leatherman awarded ScienceSouth with a check for $500,000 to train public school teachers in science curriculum standards. During the announcement Royall students experienced ScienceSouth programming first-hand. Students constructed solar-powered cars in one of ScienceSouth's newest workshops, the ScienceSouth Solar Power Challenge. While students were busy with their activity, ScienceSouth Chairman Hood Temple unveiled the second mobile lab, named in honor of Sen. Leatherman.

ScienceSouth serves several districts throughout the Pee Dee that are part of its consortium, including Florence School District One. Larry Jackson, the Florence District One superintendent, spoke on behalf of his fellow Pee Dee superintendents. Jackson said although he didn't find school fun when he was a child, he's pleased that today students have such enthusiasm building solar-powered cars.

ScienceSouth's Educational Programs Manager Retha Kelly-Horne says she's thankful for Leatherman's ongoing support of ScienceSouth. "With this help, we can service an even larger area of the Pee Dee and reach even more children who need innovative techniques to keep their interest in school, expand their knowledge base, and get better grades, especially in science," Kelly-Horne said.

ScienceSouth is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to educate, inspire and entertain. Since 2003, ScienceSouth has reached more than 60,000 students and teachers in hands-on, standards-based science and technology workshops and programs.
