ScienceSouth Heads Back to School
Monday, August 20, 2007
Florence, SC -- The Leatherman Mobile Lab is stacked, packed and ready to roll
into a school new school year with several new and exciting programs for students in
the Pee Dee. A brochure describing the programs for the 2007-2008 school year can be
downloaded from here.
"Each school year ScienceSouth aims to bring innovative hands-on and standards-based
programming to schools across the region," Outreach Specialist Erin Powers said. "This
school year we're bringing technology, geology and biology into the schools like they've
never seen before. We're confident that at the end of the day we'll get the seal of approval
from our most valued clients -- the students of the Pee Dee."
The ScienceSouth on Wheels program will offer an array of workshops that cross both curricula
and grade levels. Some of the new programs include Forces of Attraction and Soil Sleuths for
the younger grades to Mad About Electronics and Microbiology for older students. Students can
also continue to enjoy other favorites such as the StarLab Planetarium and DNA Extraction.
This fall ScienceSouth will launch Bubblemania and in the spring it will debut the traveling
show Insects on Stage.
Established in 2000 by a group of educators and business leaders seeking to address the
education gap, ScienceSouth's vision is to advance scientific understanding and increase the
competiveness of future generations.
"ScienceSouth aims to introduce each child that sets foot onboard the mobile lab to science
equipment that he or she would otherwise not have the opportunity to use in a classroom setting,"
said Retha Kelly-Horne, curriculum and delivery specialist. "When students attend one our workshops
they are no longer stationary observers but active participants in the world of science."
