"Some people think that you can only do science in a laboratory and that's not the case. Investigating the soil under your feet and the birds in your backyard is science. "

ScienceSouth Partners with Lynches River County Park

Thursday, June 28, 2007

Coward, SC -- ScienceSouth and Florence County's Lynches River County Park Environmental Discovery Center (EDC) committee met at the EDC on Thursday, June 28, 2007 to sign a memorandum of understanding in partnership to advance learning opportunities for the region.

ScienceSouth and Florence County's Lynches River County Park EDC share the philosophy that learning is an entertaining, enjoyable and rewarding experience. Each organization has a mission to create learning experiences that foster experiential learning, thinking and awareness of the importance of the natural resources. Together the organizations can provide exciting and enriching learning experiences for the residents of and visitors to Florence County and the Pee Dee Region.

"Developing partnerships is a vital development strategy for ScienceSouth as a private not for profit," said ScienceSouth Chairman Hood Temple. "By leveraging the combined resources of ScienceSouth and Lynches River EDC, we can streamline our educational efforts and enhance the impact in our community."

The mission of the Lynches River Park Committee and the EDC is to develop and reveal the natural resources of the Lynches River Park for the purpose of advancing education, stewardship and recreation for the residents of and visitors to Florence County.

"The Environmental Discovery Center offers people the unique opportunity for meaningful discovery in their own backyard," Chairwoman Sterling Sadler said. "Visitors will explore nature where it is, rather than read about it or look at models. They will use real tools to explore actual natural artifacts and examine processes closely where they occur naturally in the park."

ScienceSouth and Florence County's EDC agree to cooperate to conduct activities, which advance the educational mission of both organizations. Activities range from sharing the expertise of staff and use of facilities to collaborating on new projects and fundraising.
