Florence, SC, June 9, 2008-On Monday, June 9 the United Way of Florence County awarded funding to ScienceSouth that will make summer science fun possible for some area children. At its Florence office, the United Way presented ScienceSouth Project Director Colleen Zilio a $10,000 check that will sponsor 40 Florence students to attend ScienceSouth’s summer kids’ camp.

“This grant will assist ScienceSouth in the provision of career awareness and focus during the summer months for area youth who would not otherwise have the opportunity to do so,” said President David Barr of the United Way of Florence County. “The program has clearly stated anticipated outcomes and is designed to plant the seeds of technological inquiry that will, hopefully, manifest itself in future technicians and scientists from this target group.”

“ScienceSouth is focused on the development of the next generation of engineers, scientists, and technicians,” Zilio said. “We are thrilled that the United Way will provide the opportunity for 40 students to participate in summer camps that will give them a deeper understanding of critical science concepts. We aim for students to leave with alternative ways of thinking about careers in science and technology.”

Through the summer camps, students will discover the excitement of learning through hands-on activities enabling them to experience the real world of science. “The 40 sponsored children come from low-income families that financially may not be able to send their child to camp,” Zilio said. “Economics should not deter academic enhancement and we’re so happy that the United Way stepped in to provide these children with the chance to take their first steps to a new career path and a successful future.”

ScienceSouth launched its first camp on June 9 and will offer various camps through mid-July. The camps range from Animals in Our Backyard and Crime Science Investigators to Engineering Marvels and Fantastic Flying.
