ScienceSouth Achieves target of 30,000 participants!
Tuesday, May 23, 2006
ScienceSouth Board of Trustee Chairman Hood Temple is pleased to announce that
ScienceSouth has exceeded its target of 25,000 program participants. The ScienceSouth
team of five permanent staff has used a variety of outreach programs to engage 30,000
students and teachers in programs in the 2005-06 school year.
“We are very excited by the support and response to our education programs,” said Temple.
“With this level of participation we are demonstrating the value of the ScienceSouth
educational experience to both our participants and the partners who support our efforts.”
In August of 2005 Senator Hugh Leatherman (R-District 31) announced funding directed to
support ScienceSouth’s educational programs and launched the Science on Wheels program.
At that time Sen. Leatherman indicated that ScienceSouth’s expected target was 25,000
participants per year.
“Achieving 30,000 participants in one year demonstrates that ScienceSouth is a
unique and successful partnership between a consortium of school districts, state
and private sector partners,” said ScienceSouth Trustee Dr. John Kirby. “The outreach
programs are an innovative approach to service a diverse region with both city and rural
schools.” In the 2005 school year ten school districts from Florence, Marion, Dillon and
Marlboro participated in the consortium.
We acknowledge and thank our partners McLeod Health, The Junior League of Florence,
Roche Carolina, Wachovia, K&L Chrome Shop, the City of Dillon, The Lucas Family Foundation,
Honda of South Carolina, the City of Florence, Progress Energy, First Citizens,
Smurfit Stone Container and United Energy Distributors, and private donors for their
support of our efforts.
