Sidewalk Astronomy Offers a “Hauler” of a Good Time
Friday, May 1, 2009
Florence, SC, May 1, 2009-ScienceSouth will kick off May’s Sidewalk Astronomer programs on
Thursday, May 7, 2009 at the 5th Annual Darlington Car Hauler Parade & Festival at the Florence
Civic Center. The Sidewalk Astronomer will be on hand from 4:00-5:30 pm.
“We are very excited to be a part of the Darlington Car Hauler Parade,” said Sheryl Love,
director of Marketing and Development for ScienceSouth. “This is a great opportunity for
families to learn about ScienceSouth and a fantastic way for them to see and experience
science in action.”
ScienceSouth’s Sidewalk Astronomer will hold a night viewing on Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at
Indigo Joe’s in Florence from 8:00-9:30 pm. On Tuesday’s kids eat for free with each adult
entrée purchase.
In celebration of the International Year of Astronomy 2009’s (IYA2009) theme, “The Universe,
Yours to Discover,” ScienceSouth provides residents and visitors to the Pee Dee a glimpse into
outer space. Each month, the “Sidewalk Astronomer” appears at various locations around the Pee
Dee. During the day observers are able to see solar eruptions through an H1-Alpha telescope
that filters out the sun’s damaging rays. At night you can look through a spectacular 10-inch
Dobsonian reflecting telescope that filters out the lights of the “big city” for optimal
viewing of the evening sky. All Sidewalk Astronomy events are free and the locations are
announced monthly.
If you would like the Sidewalk Astronomer to visit your place of business or area,
please contact ScienceSouth at 843-679-5353.
ScienceSouth is a nonprofit educational organization with the mission to advance scientific
