"Thank you so much for coming to our school. I had so much fun, and the solar cars were so cool. I’m going to look into studying other types of energy. Thank you again!"

ScienceSouth on Jeffries Creek Officially Opens

Friday, March 28, 2008

Florence, SC - Senator Hugh K. Leatherman (R-Dist. 31) and Mayor Frank Willis of Florence joined the ScienceSouth Board and staff to officially open the doors of the new science pavilion located near Freedom Florence. The opening ceremony will started at 11 am at 1511 Freedom Blvd. on Friday, March 28, 2008.

Inside the Learning Pavilion everyone becomes a scientist! People will engage in REAL science using scientific equipment in our minds-on hands-on workshops. To celebrate, and kick off the opening weekend, ScienceSouth in partnership with the City of Florence hosted the first annual SCI FLY event! From 10:00 am to 1:00 pm on Saturday March 29, 2008 families visited ScienceSouth, learnt the science of kite building and built their own kite.

“ScienceSouth’s workshops are wonderful for families to spend quality time together,” Chairman Cary Ashworth said. “Families who visit the learning pavilion will participate in one or two hour hands-on workshops. We are taking programs that have been so popular with children at schools and adapting them so that children and adults can learn together. New programs will be introduced every six weeks, so families can return again and again to take part in a variety of workshops.”

Since its inception, ScienceSouth has worked to advance the achievement of young people in the Pee Dee community. With the opening of ScienceSouth on Jeffries Creek, the focus will broaden to include learning experiences for families in the Pee Dee region and beyond. The ScienceSouth Learning pavilion will serve as ScienceSouth’s home base for family programming and the mobile lab programs, which will continue to deliver programming directly to schools.
