Friday, March 28, 2008

Florence, SC, March 28, 2008- Guest of honor Sen. Hugh Leatherman (R-31) presented ScienceSouth with a check for 750,000 dollars during ScienceSouth’s opening ceremony on Friday March 28.

In making the presentation to the crowd of 200 people gathered for the opening event Leatherman said, “ScienceSouth does what I call out-of-the-box learning.” “Can you imagine 100,000 kids have had their minds really broadened and expanded? Today we are opening the doors not cutting the ribbons to a 7500 square foot facility that will serve these young people, serve this area of South Carolina.”

Senator Leatherman was praised by City of Florence Mayor Frank Willis for his vision and leadership in supporting ScienceSouth development over the years. “When we open the doors to ScienceSouth . . . in reality we’re opening the doors to the future and with ScienceSouth it becomes a much brighter future.” Over the past four years Senator Leatherman has supported the organization with over 2.25 million dollars.

“The 750,000 in funding will be used to complete the ScienceSouth Pavilion,” ScienceSouth Chairman Cary Ashworth said. “ScienceSouth has built a tremendous amount of momentum in the last few years years, with the operation of the Leatherman Mobile Lab and programs for schools. Opening the Pavilion enables ScienceSouth to offer exciting learning experiences in this fantastic facility, which was made possible with the support of Senator Leatherman.”

ScienceSouth is a non-profit educational institution with the mission to advance scientific understanding and increase the competitiveness of future generations. Since 2003 ScienceSouth has engaged more than 100,000 teachers and students in hands-on, minds-on science programming.
