ScienceSouth Shoots for the Stars
Posted Wednesday February 18, 2009
Florence, SC, February 18, 2009- This February ScienceSouth will shoot for the stars and welcome
Comet Lulin, a first-time visitor to the inner solar system. ScienceSouth will sponsor a free
nighttime viewing on Tuesday, February 24, 2009 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the Lynches River
County Park. There will be a solar viewing at the same location on Saturday, February 28, 2009
from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm.
“Stargazers of all ages will not only have the chance to observe star clusters, but also delight
in the Orion Nebula, a star nursery, which appears as the center star of Orion’s sword,” Sidewalk
Astronomer Tony Martinez said. “We will also attempt to locate Comet Lulin as it makes its first
swing into the solar system.”
Comet Lulin, first spotted in 2007, bears the namesake of the Taiwan observatory of its discovery.
Due to its unique orbit and high velocity, onlookers may be able to see the minute-by-minute
movement of the green comet across the stars.
In celebration of the International Year of Astronomy 2009’s (IYA2009) theme, “The Universe,
Yours to Discover,” ScienceSouth launched the Sidewalk Astronomer. The monthly program occurs
at various locations across the Pee Dee and provides residents and visitors to the area an
opportunity to get a glimpse into space. All Sidewalk Astron-omy events are free and the
location will be announced each month.
If you would like the Sidewalk Astronomer to visit your place of business or area, please
