Jim O'Loughlin Named Chairman of ScienceSouth's Operating Board

Florence, SC, January 20, 2009-ScienceSouth begins a new year with Jim O’Loughlin, chief executive
officer of Carolinas Hospital System, at the helm of its operating board. The operating board
is responsible for general fiscal and operations oversight of ScienceSouth.
"ScienceSouth is privileged to have a great group of community leaders on its operating board. We
have representation from education, industry, medicine, accounting, law, local government and other
community organizations,” Executive Director Dick Powell of ScienceSouth said. “This diversity of
skills forms a strong oversight team for the ScienceSouth organization. And most importantly, all
have a sincere desire to see our Pee Dee students succeed in their science education. Jim O'Loughlin
is well known in our community as a dynamic leader. We are very fortunate to have him as our board chairman."
O’Loughlin replaces Cary Ashworth as chairman of the operating board. Ashworth served as chairman since
2008. During Ashworth’s tenure ScienceSouth opened the ScienceSouth Pavilion at Freedom Florence, its
first permanent facility.
"On behalf of the board of directors, I would like to thank Cary Ashworth for his service as
Board Chair,” O’Loughlin said. “He has done a fine job of making this project a reality and
transitioning a new leadership team."
