Posted Thursday, May 11, 2008
FLORENCE, SC -- On Wednesday, June 11, 2008 Progress Energy officials presented ScienceSouth
with a check for $15,000 to fund energy and conservation workshops. The presentation took place
during ScienceSouth’s first week of science kids’ camp, held at the ScienceSouth Pavilion on
Jeffries Creek.
"We are excited to support ScienceSouth and their Sustainable Living programs," said Emerson
Gower, Progress Energy vice president, Southern Region. "Exploring new methods of energy conservation
and alternative energy is important to the future of our state. And Progress Energy is proud to be a
part of that effort." The new funding will support the Sustainable Living programs to be piloted
this summer and launched this fall at the ScienceSouth Pavilion on Jeffries Creek. “We share
Progress Energy’s determination to use and conserve energy sources which, doing so, ultimately
protects our environment,” said Cary Ashworth Chairman of ScienceSouth Board of Trustees. “ A
partnership between ScienceSouth and Progress Energy to enhance the public understanding of
energy conservation and application of hydrogen, solar, and other forms of renewable and
alternative energy sources is mutually beneficial.”
The staple of the Sustainable Living programs would be to build a model house complete with
solar panels, windmill, green house, and desalination. Families and children can also participate
in workshops ranging from The Heat Trap Challenge and The Water Vampire to Power Plants and The
Forces of Magnetism, all adapted variations from the solar house.
